EVs Offer Increased Safety for Teens
With all their built-in active safety features, an EV would make an ideal choice for a first-time driver. These include:
- Automatic Emergency Braking – automatically engages the brakes in an impending crash.
- Rear Cross-Traffic Alert – informs the driver if another vehicle is approaching when the vehicle is in reverse (such a backing out of a parking space).
- One Pedal Driving – It is a driving technique where you can control both acceleration and deceleration using just the accelerator pedal, eliminating the need to use brake pedal except in emergencies. It is an EV feature that could help teens who are still learning to judge distances while driving as the vehicle will automatically begin braking when not accelerating.
Parental Benefits
- In many modern EVs, parents can monitor and control their teen’s actions on the road, giving them insight into how their teen is driving.
- Parents can set speed alerts and other limits (like audio system volumes and disabling the EVs ability to shift out of park if the driver’s seat belt is not buckled).
Financial Benefits
- Used EVs will have a longer lifespan in kilometers than their gas counterparts.
- Many insurance companies provide a discount for EVs.
- With charging at home, arguments about who is responsible to fill up and pay for gas are avoided. Maintenance costs are much cheaper for EVs.
